What to aim for?
Ducks and geese should be able to roam around and should have access to clean water at all times,
and turkeys and broilers should be able to scratch
for insects and have dust baths in the sun.
Humanely farmed animals
live longer, are healthier and have more active lives.
More and more good free-range and
organic farms keep animals in
conditions close to their natural environment.
- They choose strong traditional breeds that have better resistance to disease and to parasites.
- They grow animals at a natural rate and do not use antibiotics or hormones just to increase productivity.
- They allow
the animals to express their normal behavior and
- They prevent the need for mutilations such as beak clipping.
But there is much more
to be done. Most animals still live and die in factory
farms, because the demand for cheap food is still too high.
